Dusk in Silence – Beneath the Great Sky of Solitude

The atmospheric black metal scene in Indonesia grows with every passing day. One of the latest bands to emerge from there is Dusk in Silence. It was formed sometime around 2019 by Bangoen, the drummer of Inverted. He worked quickly, for just two years later, he released his first full-length album Beneath the Great Sky of Solitude. It features cover art by Aghy Purakusuma, who I have mentioned in the past. His work is associated with many great albums, so it’s no surprise that this one is great as well.

If you’ve ever listened to Pure Wrath, then you’ll already know what Dusk in Silence will sound like. The music is mostly fast-paced with some moodier slow sections scattered throughout. The production has that warm quality that is a hallmark of the genre. It invokes the power and majesty of nature. Since Bangoen is primarily a drummer, it’s obvious that the drums would be the best part. His blast beats are precise and pulverizing. The mid-paced rhythms feature copious amounts of thumping double bass. They are all punctuated by elaborate fills.

His vocals consist of a harsh rasp that is typical of the genre. It’s still performed well, so I have no problem with that. What surprised me were the clean vocals on the first track. I wish the album had more curve balls like that. The guitar work is fantastic, which is to be expected of the Indonesians. Everything is steeped in melody. The tremolo riffs are imbued with a sublime energy that makes the music sound epic. Some sections have a dark tone while others sound much more uplifting. All of the riffs flow nicely from one to the next and they never overstay their welcome.

Dusk in Silence is another fine addition to the growing Indonesian atmospheric black metal scene. Aggression and melody come together to create a fantastic display that lifts the spirit. May their music serve as an inspiration to other bands that follow in their wake.
